Staying in Boyana & the Vitosha Foothills

Best for: Hikers, skiers, drivers, fresh air

Boyana is barely Sofia at all, and that is the point. The neighborhood sits on the lower slopes of Vitosha, 15 to 25 minutes by car from the center depending on traffic, with pine forest starting where the streets end. The Boyana Church, with its 13th century frescoes on the UNESCO World Heritage list, is here, and so is the excellent National Historical Museum.

People stay in Boyana for the mountain. In winter the Vitosha ski runs are a short drive up the road, and in summer the same slopes turn into a hiking network with trails to the Boyana Waterfall and up toward Cherni Vrah, the summit. Guesthouses and small family hotels with gardens dominate the accommodation here.

Be honest with yourself about logistics. Without a car, or at least a tolerance for taxis, Boyana is inconvenient for sightseeing in the center. As a base for an active trip built around the mountain, it is the best neighborhood in the city. See what is available below.

Getting around from Boyana

There is no metro in Boyana and there will not be one. City buses connect the quarter to the center, but they are slow, and most visitors settle into a rhythm of taxis, which cost little and take 15 to 25 minutes each way depending on traffic. If you plan to ski or hike more than once, a rental car pays for itself.

The upside of sitting on the mountain road is that the Vitosha trailheads and winter lifts are minutes away, and day trips toward Rila Monastery start with a head start out of the city.

Questions people ask about Boyana

Do I need a car to stay in Boyana?

You will want one, or a tolerance for taxis. There is no metro, and the ride to the center takes 15 to 25 minutes. For a mountain-focused trip the location is worth it.

How close is the skiing?

The Vitosha lifts and runs are a short drive up the mountain road from Boyana. In summer the same slopes become hiking trails, including the path to the Boyana Waterfall.

Is Boyana a good base for sightseeing in Sofia?

Only partly. The Boyana Church and the National Historical Museum are right there, but for the city center you will commute. Stay here for the mountain, not for the museums downtown.
