Almost everything a visitor wants sits inside a walkable core between the Lions' Bridge and the NDK palace, with the Vitosha mountain hanging over the south end of the city.
The metro matters more than people expect. One line connects the airport to the center in about 20 minutes, which opens up cheaper rooms along the way without stranding you. And if your trip is really about skiing or hiking Vitosha, skip the downtown hotels entirely and look at Boyana in the foothills.

What is the best area to stay in Sofia?
For a first visit, the City Center around Vitosha Boulevard puts every major sight within a 15 minute walk. Repeat visitors tend to prefer the quieter Oborishte quarter or Lozenets, and travelers focused on Vitosha mountain stay in Boyana.
Is Sofia expensive for hotels?
No. Sofia is one of the cheapest European capitals for accommodation. Solid mid-range rooms in the center often cost what a budget room would in Western Europe, and even five star hotels are reasonable by international standards.
How do I get from Sofia Airport to the city center?
The metro runs directly from Terminal 2 to the center in about 20 minutes, with trains roughly every ten minutes. Licensed taxis from the official rank are the alternative late at night.
How many nights do I need in Sofia?
Two to three nights cover the city itself comfortably. Add more if you want day trips to Rila Monastery, Plovdiv or a day of hiking or skiing on Vitosha.
Is central Sofia walkable?
Very. The core between the Lions’ Bridge and the NDK palace is compact and flat, and most visitors never need transport except for the airport and the mountain.
